Ryuko Kawabata

Japanese: 川端竜子 - かわばたりゅうし

1885-1966 A Japanese painter from the Taisho to Showa periods.
Born June 6, 1885. Studied Western painting at the Hakuba-kai Western Painting Institute and other institutions. After moving to the United States, he switched to Japanese painting and joined the Musei-kai group with Hirafuku Hyakusui and others. In 1916, his work "The Origin of the Reisen" won the Chogyu Prize at the Inten Exhibition. In 1929, he founded and led the Seiryu-sha Society, advocating venue art. He produced a number of grandiose and unrestrained masterpieces. In 1951, he was awarded the Order of Culture. He passed away on April 10, 1966, aged 80. He was from Wakayama Prefecture. His real name was Shotaro. Other works include "The Song of the New Tree" and "The Sound of Waves."

明治18年6月6日生まれ。白馬会洋画研究所などで洋画をまなぶ。渡米後,日本画に転向,平福百穂(ひゃくすい)らの无声(むせい)会に参加。大正5年院展で「霊泉由来」が樗牛(ちょぎゅう)賞受賞。昭和4年会場芸術をとなえ青竜社を結成,主宰した。壮大で奔放な数々の大作を発表。34年文化勲章。昭和41年4月10日死去。80歳。和歌山県出身。本名は昇太郎。作品はほかに「新樹の曲」「潮騒」など。
