Amakusa Nada

Japanese:
Amakusa Nada

This area stretches from the west of Amakusa Shimoshima in western Kumamoto Prefecture. It has strong tides and rough winds and waves. It borders Nomozaki and the Goto Islands in Nagasaki Prefecture to the northwest, and Kuro-no-Seto and Nagashima Strait to the south. Influenced by the north-flowing Tsushima Warm Current, it is a good fishing ground for horse mackerel, mackerel, sardines, as well as bonito, mahi-mahi, sea bream, and squid, and is the most prosperous offshore and coastal fishing area in Kumamoto Prefecture. However, as with the depletion of marine resources in the waters off Japan, the amount of fish caught has been declining sharply in recent years. In contrast, the construction of the Amakusa Five Bridges and the Kuro-no-Seto Ohashi Bridge has made it easier to access the rocky beaches with their strangely shaped rocks, making it a great fishing spot for surf fishing or for sightseeing. As a result, fishermen who have relied on fishing in the Amakusa Nada are trying to position the Amakusa Nada as part of tourism on the west coast of Amakusa, by linking it with the spectacular scenery of Myokenura, with its crashing waves (a national scenic spot and natural monument), and the cliffs of Jusanbutsuzaki, and by using these facilities as guesthouses.
