わかい‐しゅ【若衆】

〘名〙 (「わかいしゅう」とも)① 年若い男子。若い者。※虎明本狂言・老武者(室町末‐近世初)「わかひしゅうの申さるるは」② 特に、肉体労働などに従事する元気のよい人。若い者。※婦系図(1907)〈泉鏡花〉後「一寸(ちょいと)車夫(ワカイシュ)に声を懸けたが」③ 商店などで、小僧より年長で階級の上の者のこと。手代。若い者。※浮世草子・好色一代女(1686)四「第一内かたは気(りんき)ふかし面屋の若(ワカ)い衆(シュ)と物云事も嫌ひ給ふなり」④ 歌舞伎の楽屋、芝居茶屋、遊郭などで働く男をいう。若い者。※洒落本・呼子鳥(1779)品川八景「わかいしゅおれがぞうりをくんない」⑤ 歌舞伎で、最下級の役者をいう。普通は番付に名が出ない。※滑稽本・客者評判記(1811)中「馬役をつとむる者は若い衆(シュ)ではござらぬ」
