In October 42 BCE, a battle took place at Philippi in eastern Macedonia between the armies of Brutus and Cassius, the assassins of Caesar and the republicans, and the armies of Octavian (later Augustus) and Antony, the powerful men of the second triumvirate. Two battles were fought, and in the first battle Cassius committed suicide, and in the second battle (on the 23rd) Brutus was defeated and committed suicide. Octavian did not achieve much success in battle, and Antony, the actual victor, expanded his influence in the east after the battle, and soon the struggle for succession between the two men intensified.
