[Prehistoric to ancient times]
During the Neolithic period, this region was one of the most advanced in Europe. The early agricultural cultures of Starčevo, dating from the second half of the 6th millennium BC, located east of present-day Belgrade along the Danube River, and Vinča, which followed, are standard sites. In addition, at Lepenski Vir, which preceded them, ritual remains including stone sculptures depicting human faces have been excavated, providing valuable examples of the spiritual life of people in the hunter-gatherer era. At Predionica near Pristina in Kosovo, a small clay statue with emphasized eyes and nose from the second half of the 2nd millennium BC was unearthed, and from the Illyrian period, at Vače, east of Ljubljana in central Slovenia, a bronze vessel dating to around 500 BC with hammered depictions of daily life and animals was excavated. …
