Kiso horse

Japanese: 木曾馬 - きそうま
Kiso horse

...It was imported at the end of the Meiji period, but due to poor performance it was soon discontinued.
[Native species]
There are seven types of small indigenous horses that have been kept in Japan for a long time: the Hokkaido Washu (illustration), affectionately known as Dosanko (born in Hokkaido), the Kiso and Misaki horses, which are remnants of the old feudal era, the small island-type indigenous horses Tsushima's Tsushu and Takarajima's Tokara, and the Okinawan Miyako and Yonaguni horses. None of them have white marks on their faces or limbs, and many have eel lines on their backs.

From Kiso Fukushima [town]

...After the Meiji period, it became the administrative center of Kiso County, and in 1947, the Kiso Branch Office of the Imperial Forestry Bureau, which managed the Kiso Imperial Forest, was established here. Until the 1950s, the Kiso region was a breeding ground for the Kiso horse, a native horse of Japan, and a horse market was held in the town, but it has now been replaced by a cattle market. There are many famous places and historical sites, including the remains of a checkpoint, Kozenji Temple, where Kiso Yoshinaka's grave is located, and the Takase family home depicted in Shimazaki Toson's "House." There is also a town museum that displays transportation-related materials. ...
