It is also read as "Chuwain". It is the name of a sanctuary in the Daidairi of the Heian Palace. It is also called Chuin. It occupies an area of 40 jo (about 121 meters) square to the north of Chodoin. During ceremonies such as the Niiname-sai and Jinkonjiki, the Shinto ritual was held in the main hall, Shinkaden, where the emperor would eat meals intimately with the gods. Shinkaden is a south-facing building with eaves on all four sides of the main building, which is seven bays from east to west and two bays from north to south. The main building is divided into three nurigome (lacquered rooms), and the seats for the emperor and the gods were set up in the central room (also called the shrine). To the north of Shinkaden was the Kitaden, and at the ends of the corridors that extend from the east and west of Shinkaden and turn south were the Higashi-sha and Nishi-sha.
