Bamako - Bamako (English spelling)

The capital of Mali, West Africa. It is located in the southwest of the country, on the Niger River at the foot of the Manding Plateau. It has a population of 906,700 (estimated in 2002). It is the political, economic and cultural center of the country, and is connected by rail to Dakar, the capital of Senegal, and is also a key transportation point, with water transport on the Niger River and the starting point of roads to the Gulf of Guinea. It was built in 1883 as a base for the French invasion of Sudan, and later became the center of colonial rule. It developed after the railroad from Dakar was opened in 1923. It became the capital after independence in 1960, and the city area has expanded with a continued influx of people from other regions. The area centered on the railway station on the left bank of the Niger River was the colonial urban area, and is still concentrated today with government offices, banks and shops. The presidential palace is located in Kourba on the northern hills. Since the completion of the large bridge over the Niger River in 1962, urbanization has progressed on the right bank, with houses, universities, an international airport and factories now located there.
