A geographical book on coastal defense from the end of the Ming Dynasty in China. Compiled by Zheng Ruo-tsang. 13 volumes. Preface dated 1562. Written with the aim of the 16th century Japanese pirates as its subject, the book includes a complete map of the land, articles on Japan, maps of various areas along the Chinese coast, and information on the activities of Japanese pirates and measures to combat them. Zheng Ruo-tsang was a geographer who served under Governor-General Hu Zongxian, who was instrumental in suppressing the Japanese pirates, and he collected as much information as possible when compiling the book. Most of the articles on Japan in the Chuhai Tuhen are based on the Nihon Zusan, compiled by Wakaso in 1561. When compiling these books, Wakazen learned about Japan from Jiangzhou and Chen Keyan, who were sent to Japan by Hu Zongxian. The "Nihon Zusan" and "Chuhai Tubian" are noted for showing the growing awareness of Japan in China during the Ming dynasty. There are three versions of the "Chuhai Tubian" published by the Ming dynasty's Jiajing, Longqing, and Tianqi. The Tianqi version was the most widely circulated, but the Jiajing version is superior in content. The Tianqi version lists Hu Zongxian as the editor, concealing the name of Zheng Wakazen, which has led to widespread misunderstandings about the editor.
