The development of 20th century music in Japan is completely different from that in Europe and the United States. Yamada Kosaku, Japan's first serious composer of "Western music," composed Japan's first symphony, Kachidoki to Heiwa (Wind and Peace), in 1912 while studying in Berlin. Having acquired 18th and 19th century Western compositional techniques through this symphony, Yamada became interested in the compositional techniques of R. Strauss, Scriabin, Debussy, and others, and produced works influenced by the Western style from the late 19th century to the early 20th century, such as the tone poem Mandala (Dappled Flowers) (1913) and the dance-poem drama Maria Magdalena (1916).

　日本における20世紀音楽の展開は，欧米とはまったく異なる様相を呈している。日本の〈洋楽〉の最初の本格的な作曲家山田耕筰は，ベルリン留学中の1912年に，日本の最初の交響曲《かちどきと平和》を作曲した。この交響曲で西洋の18,19世紀の作曲技法を身につけた山田は，R.シュトラウス，スクリャービン，ドビュッシーらの作曲技法に興味をもち，西洋の19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけての様式に影響を受けた作品，音詩《曼陀羅（まだら）の華》(1913)，舞踊詩劇《マリア･マグダレーナ》(1916)などを発表した。…
