An old town in the western part of the Shimabara Peninsula, Minamitakaki District, Nagasaki Prefecture. The settlement developed below the Chijiwa Fault Cliff, and National Route 57 runs along the shore of Chijiwa Bay (Tachibana Bay). It was damaged in the Isahaya Flood of 1957. The town produces rice, potatoes, and mandarin oranges, and also raises livestock. The bay coast is beautiful, and there is a swimming beach. In October 2005, it merged with Kunimi Town, Mizuho Town, Agatsuma Town, Aino Town, Obama Town, and Minamikushiyama Town from Nishitakaki District to become Unzen City. 32.43 km2 . 5,920 people (2003). 長崎県南高来(みなみたかき)郡,島原半島西部の旧町。千々石断層崖下に集落が発達,千々石湾(橘湾)岸に国道57号線が通じる。1957年の諫早(いさはや)水害で被害を受けた。米,ジャガイモ,ミカンを産し,畜産も行う。湾岸は風光にすぐれ,海水浴場がある。2005年10月,西高来郡国見町,瑞穂町,吾妻町,愛野町,小浜町,南串山町と合併し市制,雲仙市となる。32.43km2。5920人(2003)。
