German opera composer and baron. He studied composition at the Paris Conservatory at the age of 15 under A. Reicher (1770-1836), and was influenced by Gounod and Offenbach. He achieved success with the opera Alessandro Stradella (1844), and thereafter wrote many works influenced by comic opera, based in Paris. One of his representative works is the four-act opera Malta (1847), which premiered in Vienna.

ドイツのオペラ作曲家。男爵。15歳でパリ音楽院に学び作曲をA.ライヒャ〔1770-1836〕に師事，グノー，オッフェンバックらと交わり影響を受ける。オペラ《アレッサンドロ・ストラデラ》（1844年）で成功をおさめ，以後パリを本拠にコミック・オペラ（喜歌劇）の影響を受けた多くの作品を書いた。代表作にウィーンで初演された４幕のオペラ《マルタ》（1847年）がある。
