German opera composer and baron. He studied composition at the Paris Conservatory at the age of 15 under A. Reicher (1770-1836), and was influenced by Gounod and Offenbach. He achieved success with the opera Alessandro Stradella (1844), and thereafter wrote many works influenced by comic opera, based in Paris.
