An artificial solution used as a substitute for blood or extracellular fluid. Also called physiological salt solution. Organs and tissues removed from a living organism can be kept functional for a considerable period of time if they are placed in a substitute solution that is compatible with the animal or perfused with the substitute solution. However, sufficient oxygen must be dissolved in the solution. The substitute solution usually used is one with a composition similar to that of the interstitial fluid of the animal, but a solution with a similar composition is used in mammals, and a slightly lower concentration is used in amphibians.
