1849‐1909 American female novelist. Born in South Berwick, Maine, the daughter of a country doctor, she became deeply acquainted with the nature and customs of the region. She began publishing her works at the age of 18, and in 1873 her first story about Maine was published in Atlantic Monthly. In 1877 she published her first book, Deephaven, in which she described the cherished charm of the town, once a thriving port but now deserted, through the eyes of an outsider, presenting a unique world of local color literature.
