American female novelist. Born in South Berwick, Maine, the daughter of a country doctor, she became deeply acquainted with the nature and customs of the region. She began publishing her works at the age of 18, and in 1873 her first story about Maine was published in Atlantic Monthly. In 1877 she published her first book, Deephaven, in which she described the cherished charm of the town, once a thriving port but now deserted, through the eyes of an outsider, presenting a unique world of local color literature.

アメリカの女流小説家。メーン州サウス･バーウィックに田舎医師の娘として生まれ，その地方の自然や風俗に深くなじんだ。18歳の年から作品を発表し始め，1873年にはメーンを描く物語が初めて《アトランティック･マンスリー》誌に掲載された。77年に最初の著書《ディープヘーブン》を出版，かつては港として栄えながら今はさびれている町の捨てがたい趣を外来者の目を通して綴り，地方色文学に独自の世界を呈示してみせた。
