Born: February 26, 1928 in New Orleans, Louisiana [Died] October 24, 2017. An American singer and pianist from Herbie, Louisiana. His real name was Antoine Domino, Jr. A pioneer of rock music who was active in the R&B (→ rhythm and blues) world. He created a unique atmosphere with his carefree playing style. Born into a musical family, he was introduced to music at a young age by his brother-in-law, a guitarist. He began performing in clubs as a teenager, and was discovered by Dave Bartholomew in 1949. His first recording, The Fat Man (1950), was the start of a string of hits, and the songs he recorded in the 1950s and 1960s sold about 65 million copies. His boogie-woogie piano playing with saxophone and drums, and his swinging vocals in a mid-baritone range with a uniform sound, were loved. They released rock arrangements of standard songs, including their signature song "Blueberry Hill" (1956). In 1986, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Domino |
