...the general term for a group of Shaivite leaders who appeared in the 7th century in the Tamil region of southern India. They are also called adyārs. They were not theologians who studied and explained the Agamas, the holy scriptures of Shaivism, but passionate religious poets who expressed their feelings of absolute devotion (bhakti) to God, drawing on texts familiar to the general public, such as the epics (the Mahabharata and the Ramayana) and the Puranas.
