It is a record of the words of the founder's sermons, lectures, questions and answers, etc., recorded by those who were present at the event, or a compilation of records of the founder's Dharma words. It was born in Zen Buddhism, which placed importance on learning through personal encounters with other people, rather than on the acquisition of conceptual knowledge that relies on books, and it placed great importance on sayings. The Tang Dynasty's "Rinji Records" are a representative example. They were written in cursive prose with the aim of conveying principles without using flowery language. In Japan, sayings are also used as part of Dharma words. Representative works include "Tannisho," a record of Shinran's teachings by his disciple Yuien; "Kudensho," compiled by Kakunyo and containing Shinran's teachings that were passed down orally; "Shobogenzo Zuimonki," a record of Dogen's teachings written by his attendant Ejo; and "Ippen Shonin Goroku," a later collection of records of Ippen's sermons.
