Cartography

Japanese: 地図学 - ちずがく（英語表記）cartography

A general term for the study of map-related subjects, including the creation, use, and other aspects of maps. In addition to ordinary maps, research subjects include cross-sections, relief maps, globes, and maps of celestial bodies other than the Earth.

Research field on cartography

There are many types of maps, but from the viewpoint of conveying information on the earth's surface, they can be divided into those that convey precise information on locations from data obtained by surveys and investigations, such as topographical maps and large- and medium-scale thematic maps, and those that convey overall information and express geographical distributions and concepts, such as small-scale thematic maps and atlases. In all of them, the common elements of scale, map projection, and diagram are the first subjects of study. The scale and map projection must be appropriately selected depending on the size of the area to be covered and the purpose of the map. The diagram must be designed to be effective, easy to read, and harmonious in its overall form, in accordance with the purpose of the map. To achieve this, psychological and aesthetic factors are also taken into account. In the case of thematic maps showing quantitative distribution, the choice of representation method, such as choropleth maps, isopleth maps, and dot maps, is also included. In addition, in map representation, a generalization (comprehensive depiction) method is required, such as simplifying, integrating, or omitting or emphasizing the main points, based on the given scale and purpose. The main subject of cartography is the set of theories and techniques for map representation as described above. In addition, research into the improvement and development of techniques, materials, and equipment for actually producing and printing maps from master maps is also important.

Furthermore, important research fields include the use of computers to digitize map information to create digital maps, systems for regional analysis and evaluation, and methods for automating map editing and drawing.

Other Research Areas

In terms of map use, research is being conducted on education in map use techniques, management of huge amounts of map data, search, map information service systems, etc. In addition, the study of scientific records related to maps and ancient maps as works of art, and through these, the study of the history of cartography, are also part of the field of cartography.

Academic Society

Cartography has developed significantly since around 1940, and academic societies have been established in various countries with the primary purpose of exchanging and disseminating information, each publishing specialized journals. Internationally, the International Cartographic Association (ICA) was established in 1959 as a sister organization of the International Geographical Union (IGU). In response to this, the Japan Cartographers Association (JCA) was established in 1962 (Showa 37). In 2012 (Heisei 24), the 50th anniversary of its founding, the society changed its name to the Cartographic Society of Japan (although its English name remained unchanged).

地図の作成、利用その他、地図にかかわる研究分野の総称。通常の地図のほか、断面図、立体地図、地球儀や、地球以外の天体に関する地図も研究対象に含まれる。

地図作成に関する研究分野

地図の種類は多種多様であるが、地表面の情報の伝達という観点からみると、地形図や大・中縮尺の主題図のように、測量・調査などによって得られたデータから精密な位置に関する情報を表現するものと、小縮尺の主題図や地図帳などのように、総体的な情報の伝達と地理的な分布・概念の表現を取り扱うものとに分けることができる。そのいずれにおいても、共通の要素である縮尺、地図投影法、図式というものが、まず研究の対象となる。縮尺と地図投影法は、対象とする地域の大きさや地図の利用目的などによって、適切に選択する必要がある。図式については、地図の目的にかなった効果的な、読みやすい図的表現がなされ、全体の調和のとれるようなデザインがなされなければならない。そのためには、心理的、美的な要素も加味される。量的な分布を示す主題図の場合は、コロプレス地図、等値線図、ドット・マップといった表現方法の選択も含まれる。また、地図表現にあたっては、与えられた縮尺や目的のもとで、表現の単純化、総合化、あるいは省略や主要事項の強調というような総描（総合描示）の手法が求められる。以上のような、地図表現上の一連の理論や技術というものが、地図学の主要な研究対象である。このほか、地図の原図から実際に製図し、印刷するための技術、材料、器械などの改善、開発に関する研究も重要である。

　さらに、コンピュータの利用により、地図情報を数値化して数値地図を作成したり、地域の分析、評価を行うシステム、あるいは地図の編集や製図を自動化する方法なども重要な研究分野となっている。

その他の研究分野

地図利用の面では、地図利用技術の教育や、膨大な地図資料の管理、検索、地図情報サービスのシステムなどの研究が行われている。また、地図に関する科学的な記録文書や芸術作品としての古地図の研究、これらを通しての地図学史の研究も、地図学の一部門をなしている。

学会

地図学は、1940年ごろから著しく発展し、情報交換、普及を主目的とした学会が各国に設立され、それぞれ専門誌を発行している。国際的には、1959年に国際地理学連合International Geographical Union（IGU）の姉妹団体として発足した国際地図学協会International Cartographic Association（ICA）がある。またこれに対応して1962年（昭和37）には日本国際地図学会Japan Cartographers Association（JCA）が設立された。なお同学会は、創立50周年を迎えた2012年（平成24）に日本地図学会に改称している（英語名は変更なし）。
