Katsushika School

A school of haiku poetry. Also known as Katsushika Seimon. The school was founded by Yamaguchi Sodo (1642-1716) and was so named because Sodo lived in Katsushika, Edo (Fukagawa, Koto-ku, Tokyo). The heads of the school have inherited Sodo's nickname Kijitsuan for successive generations, and include the first Sodo, the second Hasegawa Bakou, the third Mizoguchi Somaru, the fourth Kato Yaitsu, the fifth Sekine Hakukin, the sixth Shikakubo Minamidai, the seventh Sekine Retsuzan, the eighth Baba Shinshin, the ninth Baba Kinko, the tenth Hashimoto Sankyo, and the eleventh Takemoto Sokoto. Sodo had the air of a hermit, and the second, Maku, also started out as a hobbyist in haiku, later becoming famous as one of the "Goshikizumi" (five-colored ink) school. The third, Somaru, teamed up with Ryota of the Setsunmon school, and in the early Tenmei era (1781-1788), he took the name Katsushika Seimon and expanded the influence of the school, and the ninth, Kinko, worked hard to study the "Seven Haikai Collections." The Katsushika school has had many scholarly people since the first generation, and they made a great contribution to haiku research.
