This freshwater red alga grows in rivers along the Kirishima volcanic system in central and southern Kyushu, and because of its unique distribution, its habitats in the Kikuchi River in Kumamoto Prefecture and the Sendai River in Kagoshima Prefecture have been designated as natural monuments. The body is thread-like, dark purple, and has many branches, reaching lengths of 10 to 45 cm. It is soft and sticky, and when young, its entire surface is covered with dense, hair-like assimilated threads 10 to 30 μm long. It belongs to the order Alcalares, order Ceruleaceae, class Rhodophyceae, and a similar species is T. gaudichaudii C.Ag., which grows in Okinawa and the Mariana Islands.
