Hooked beetle (hookheaded beetle) - Hooked beetle

Japanese: コウトウチュウ(鉤頭虫) - コウトウチュウ
Hooked beetle (hookheaded beetle) - Hooked beetle
A general term for invertebrates belonging to the phylum Acanthocephala. They parasitize the digestive tracts of vertebrates such as mammals, birds, and fish, and about 1,000 species are known worldwide. Their bodies are long and slender, ranging from as short as 1 mm to over 60 cm. They are divided into anterior and torso, with the anterior body consisting of a snout and neck. Sharp hooks are arranged in a fixed pattern on the surface of the snout, which hooks onto the intestinal wall of the host. The neck is generally short, but in the long-necked hawk moth it is somewhat spirally wound, and in the Japanese hawk moth it is cone-shaped.
