Thiophenol - thiophenol

Thiophenol - thiophenol

A representative aromatic thiol (mercaptan) compound. It is also called benzenethiol or phenyl mercaptan. It is a compound with a sulfur atom instead of the oxygen atom of phenol. It has a foul odor characteristic of mercaptans. It is obtained by reducing benzenesulfonyl chloride C 6 H 5 -SO 2 Cl with powdered zinc in sulfuric acid. It is a colorless liquid. It is poorly soluble in water, but is highly soluble in ethanol (ethyl alcohol) and ether. It is more acidic than phenol. Like general mercaptans, it produces the metal salt mercaptide C 6 H 5 SM. When oxidized in air, it produces diphenyl disulfide C 6 H 5 SSC 6 H 5 (rational formula, a formula that shows the structure in more detail), and when oxidized under more severe conditions, it becomes benzenesulfonic acid. It is also used as a reducing agent because it easily releases hydrogen and becomes diphenyl disulfide C 12 H 10 S 2 (molecular formula).
