...This disease has been occurring frequently since 1945, mainly in Funachu Town, Toyama Prefecture, downstream of the Jinzu River, and although the number of deaths before 1963 is unknown, it is believed that more than 200 people have died from Itai-itai disease. The cause was initially unknown, but in 1957 it was pointed out that it was due to mineral poisoning from the Kamioka Mine of Mitsui Kinzoku upstream, and it was later discovered to be chronic cadmium poisoning. In 1968, victims filed a lawsuit demanding compensation, and the first trial in June 1971 and the second trial in August 1972 were both in favor of the victims. ...
