Vallisneria - Vallisneria

Japanese: セキショウモ - せきしょうも
Vallisneria - Vallisneria

A submerged perennial plant of the family Hydrocharisaceae (APG classification: Hydrocharisaceae). The rhizome has a smooth surface, and the leaves grow in clusters from the nodes. The ribbon-like leaves are 10-80 cm long, 5-8 mm wide, yellow-green, and have fine sawtooth on the upper edge. The name comes from the resemblance of the leaves to those of the Araceae plant. Dioecious. Flowering from August to October. Many male flowers grow in a sheath that grows at the base of the male plant, and have three sepals and one stamen. They produce white, spherical pollen on the water surface. A single female flower grows in a sheath at the end of a spirally wound flower stalk, blooms on the water surface, and after pollination, produces a fruit about 2 cm long underwater. It grows in ponds and streams, and is widely distributed throughout Japan, Asia, and Australia.
