Other-self problem

Japanese: 他我問題 - たがもんだい

This is a philosophical problem of how we can know the minds of others. For example, if I look at a red traffic light with a friend, do my friend and I sense the color red in the same way or differently? Or does my friend sense any color at all? There is no way to test this directly, because I am not my friend. However, there is an indirect way, and this is the analogy theory of the other-self problem. If my behavioral response to seeing red is roughly the same as my friend's, then we can infer that my friend has roughly the same sensations as me.

〈他人の心〉をいかにしてわれわれは知りうるかという哲学的問題。例えば，友人と赤の交通信号を見る。そのとき私と友人の赤の感覚は同じだろうか違うだろうか。あるいは，友人はそもそも何かの色を感じているのだろうか。それを直接にテストする方法はありえない。私は友人ではないからである。しかし間接的方法ならある，というのがこの〈他我問題〉での類推説である。赤を見たときの私の行動的反応と友人のそれとがほぼ同じならば友人は私とほぼ同じ感覚をもったと類推できる，というのである。
