…A Norwegian fin de siècle novelist. He wrote in Ransmål (a language created from a collection of dialect vocabulary) and worked to make it a national language. His farmer father was a strict devout man who committed suicide due to religious anguish, casting a shadow over his life. His representative work, The Country Student (1883), is a naturalistic work that depicts the suffering of a country student who moves to the city. He later turned to religious themes, portraying a man who pursues Christian ethics and is defeated in The Tired Man (1886), Peace (1892), and the play The Teacher (1896), and a woman who triumphs in the lyrical narrative poem The Nymph (1895). …

…ノルウェーの世紀末小説家。ランスモール(方言語彙を集めてつくられた言語)で書き，その国語化に尽くした。農夫の父は厳格な敬虔派で宗教的苦悶から自殺，彼の一生に影を落とした。代表作《田舎出の学生》(1883)は都会に出た田舎学生の苦悩を描く自然主義作品。やがて宗教的主題に傾き，《疲れた男》(1886)，《平安》(1892)，戯曲《教師》(1896)ではキリスト教倫理を追求して敗れる男を，抒情的な物語詩《地の精》(1895)では勝利する女の姿を描いた。…
