Owase [city] - Owase
A city in southern Mie prefecture facing the Kumano Nada Sea. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The city center faces Owase Bay and is served by the Kisei Main Line and the Kisei Expressway. Owase Port is a base for deep-sea fishing, with large catches of bonito, tuna, pacific saury, and other fish, and seafood processing is also active. A large thermal power plant and an oil complex were built in 1964. The city area is one of the rainiest areas in the country, producing a large amount of cypress and cedar lumber, and the lumber industry is thriving. Kuki is known for yellowtail fishing, and is home to the Kuki Shrine Grove (a natural monument), a colony of subtropical plants. Area: 192.71 km2 . Population: 20,033 (2010).

三重県南部,熊野灘に面する市。1954年市制。中心市街は尾鷲湾に臨み紀勢本線,紀勢自動車道が通じる。尾鷲港は遠洋漁業の拠点でカツオ,マグロ,サンマなどの漁獲が多く,水産加工も活発。1964年大火力発電所,石油コンビナートが建設された。市域は全国有数の多雨地帯で,ヒノキ・スギ材を多産,製材工業が盛んである。九鬼はブリ漁で知られ,亜熱帯植物群落の九木神社樹叢(天然記念物)がある。192.71km2。2万33人(2010)。
