Crustal material with a diameter of 2 mm or more is called gravel, and gravel that is cemented by a matrix is called gravel. Gravel is a type of sedimentary rock. The matrix can be sand, mud, calcareous material, or siliceous material. A material that is 50% or more gravel is called gravel, and if it is less than that, it is called gravel-like, but in the wild, material that is several tens of percent or more is often included in the category of gravel. Gravel is well developed in Japan, and most of it is made up of a sandy matrix. When there is only one type of gravel, it is called monogenetic (single-element) pebble, and when there are two or more types, it is called polygenetic (multi-element) pebble.

直径2mm以上の砕屑物質をレキ(礫)といい，レキが基質によって膠結（こうけつ）されたものがレキ岩である。レキ岩は堆積岩の一種である。基質には砂，泥，石灰質物質やケイ質物質がある。レキの割合が50％以上を占めるものをレキ岩といい，それ以下の場合にはレキ質と呼ぶが，野外ではレキの割合が数十％以上のものはレキ岩に含めていることが多い。日本にはレキ岩がよく発達していて，ほとんどが砂質基質からなる。レキ種が1種のときは単成(単元)レキ岩，2種以上のときは複成(多元)レキ岩という。
