He is a vassal of Emperor Yuryaku, who appears in the Nihon Shoki and Nihon Ryoiki. His name, 蜾蠃, means wasp. The Book of Songs states that 蜾蠃 means to raise the offspring of a 蜟蟉 (called mulberry worm in ancient commentaries) as one's own child. According to the section on Emperor Yuryaku in the Nihon Shoki, he was ordered to gather silkworms, but mistakenly gathered and raised children, and was given the surname Muraji. He was also ordered to capture the god of Mimoro-no-Oka, so he captured a giant snake and renamed himself Ikazuchi. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
