A 1,915m-high mountain located in South Korea, bordering Hamyang-gun and Sancheong-gun in Gyeongsangnam-do, Namwon-si in Jeollabuk-do, and Gurye-gun in Jeollanam-do. It is the highest peak in the Sobaek Mountains, and is the watershed between the Nakdong River in Yeongnam and the Seomjin River in Honam. It has long been known as one of the three sacred mountains, along with Mount Kumgang and Mount Halla. Its majestic mountain form and the vast natural forests extending to Nogodan (1,507m) in the southwest are used as an experimental forest by Seoul National University for research in botany and forestry. Within the mountain are villages such as Macheon-dong, Gakyang-dong, Hwagae-dong, and Yeongwon-dong, each with its own large temple. These include Cheongeunsa Temple and Hwaeomsa Temple in the west, Sinheungsa Temple and Ssanggyeosa Temple in the south, and Hokkeji Temple and Jisso Temple in the north. Yongwei Dam and Seonghak-dong are famous for their beautiful spring rocks, and Byukwol Station is famous as the site of a great victory over Arashiyama by King Yi Seong-gye of the Yi Dynasty when he defeated the Japanese pirates. Jirisan, the mountain goddess, is enshrined in Tenno-do Hall at the top of the mountain. Jirisan has many national treasures, treasures, scenic spots, historical sites, and natural monuments, and was designated Korea's first national park (Jirisan National Park) on December 29, 1967.
