Hanaori

Japanese:
Hanaori

A type of floating weave produced in Yomitan and Shuri on Okinawa's main island, Yonaguni Island, and Amami Oshima. A simple floating weave is created by removing threads from the weave during the weaving process, and this is a pattern structure that naturally occurs in this way. Because the pattern is simple, the threads are arranged alternately to add variety. In Yomitan, this refers to floating weave that uses floating threads only in the pattern area, and has kasuri and floral patterns. The background color is white and navy, and the pattern is woven with colored threads, making it a silk or cotton fabric. On Yonaguni Island, the background is made of hemp, banana, cotton, etc. The pattern is woven with floating threads in the weft, creating a continuous alternate pattern. Originally, it was woven as clothing for the upper class, such as for formal wear, and elaborate products were made, such as Hanagura-ori, which was used in combination with silk fabric. Hanaori's thin obi (called minsa) has a unique texture, with patterns woven with the warp threads. In 1999, Sada Yonaminami was recognized as a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property of Japan (Living National Treasure).
