Kajiyama Tomb

Kajiyama Tomb
<br /> An ancient tomb in Kokufu-cho, Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture. Located in a valley in the hills of Kajiyama, this ancient tomb has long been known and was even used as an air raid shelter during the war. The main part is a horizontal stone chamber made of cut tuff. It consists of an antechamber, an entrance gate, an antechamber, and an antechamber , and is about 9.2m long. The ceiling of the antechamber is one step higher than that of the antechamber and antechamber , in a medium-height style characteristic of the right bank of the Sendai River. The antechamber is sarcophagus-shaped, 2.35m deep, 1.37m wide, and about 1.6m high, and all three sides excluding the entrance gate and the ceiling are made of a single stone. Both sides of the entrance gate are made of stone, and a hollow can be seen on the front to fit a door stone into it, and there is tuff on the floor of the antechamber that is thought to be the base stone of a combination stone sarcophagus. In 1978 (Showa 53), a colored mural was discovered on the back wall of the burial chamber, and an investigation was carried out. The mural features a symmetrical triangular pattern and a concentric circle pattern in thin lines at the top, an unidentified curved pattern in between, and a fish facing right, painted in thick brushstrokes below. Further below are two circular patterns, each about 40 cm in diameter. The motifs found in the mural include triangular patterns, circles, concentric circles, and fish, which are used in decorated burial mounds throughout Kyushu and other regions, but the combination and depiction of fish is distinctive. Based on excavated artifacts such as fragments of sueki ware and the structure of the stone chamber, it is estimated to have been built between the late 6th century and the 7th century. It was designated a historic site in 1979 (Showa 54) as a typical late burial mound representing Inaba . Furthermore, excavations conducted since 1991 have revealed that what was initially thought to be a circular tumulus is in fact a deformed octagonal tumulus measuring 2.5 to 8.5 meters on each side, with a stone wall-like terrace in the front yard. Take the Hinomaru bus from JR San-in Main Line Tottori Station to "Okamasubashi" and walk for about 25 minutes.
