Italian geographer. Professor at the University of Padua in 1911, he trained many students at the University of Rome from 1915 to 1959. He made great achievements in many fields, but was especially noted for his work in the history of geography and cartography. During the Fascist era, he fled to the Vatican and organized and studied the ancient maps held in the Vatican Library.

イタリアの地理学者。 1911年パドバ大学教授，15～59年の間，ローマ大学にあって多くの弟子を養成した。多くの分野で業績を残したが，特に地理学史，地図学史の分野ですぐれた仕事を残した。ファシズム時代にはバチカンに亡命して，バチカン図書館所蔵の古地図の整理と研究を行なった。
