[raw]? [Died] September 26, 1005. A Kyoto-style onmyodo practitioner in the mid-Heian period. Son of Abe Masuzai. Learned onmyodo from Kamo Tadayuki and his son Yasunori, and received the secrets of astronomy from Yasunori. He served as Daizen-dayu, Sakyo Gon-dayu, and astronomy doctor. As his family was located north of Tsuchimikado and east of Nishinotoin, his descendants were called the Tsuchimikado family, and prospered as onmyodo practitioners for a long time. He was active in the imperial court, fortune-telling good and bad luck, and performing onmyodo rituals (such as the Taishan Fukun Festival). He also read the rumblings of Mount Tonomine at the request of nobles such as Fujiwara no Michinaga and Yukinari, and performed other services such as exorcising illnesses and demons. In the Eiga Monogatari, he is described as a master of onmyodo, a man who was "divinely rustic," and his biographies have had a strong narrative element since early times. The Konjaku Monogatari (Tales of Times Now Past and Present) includes stories about how Abe no Seimei was favored by him, how he escaped danger when he encountered an ogre while out with his teacher Tadayuki, and how he often used a spirit. The Kojidan (Tales of Times Now Present) includes a story about how Michinaga realized he was in danger because of his pet dog, and asked Seimei to tell his divination. Seimei discovered that someone was putting a curse on Michinaga, and sent out a white heron to find the culprit. The Gaun Nichikenroku (Records of the Muromachi Period) describes him as a "creature of a spirit." As a result, people built Abe no Seimei Shrine on the site of his residence and began to worship him as a spirit. His books include Uranji Ryakuketsu (Sanji Ryakuketsu) and Kin'u Gyokuto Shu (Kin'u Gyokuto Shu).
