Battle of Sunomatagawa

Many battles have taken place near Sunomata in Mino Province. In ancient times, the Mino Road linking the Tokaido and Tosando routes passed through Sunomata, and until the end of the 16th century, the three rivers of Kiso, Nagara, and Ibi met here. As the border between Mino and Owari was a strategic military location, it was a battlefield where the forces of the east and west clashed frequently. In the Genpei War of 1181, the armies of Minamoto no Yukiie and Taira no Shigehira fought each other. In the Jōkyū War of 1221, the army of Kyoto was defeated in a defensive battle at Sunomata. During the Sengoku period, Kinoshita Tōkichirō (Toyotomi Hideyoshi), who supported Oda Nobunaga, built a castle in Sunomata overnight and repelled the Saito army. In the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute, the army of Hideyoshi faced off against the army of Tokugawa Ieyasu.

美濃(みの)国墨俣付近で行われた数々の戦い。墨俣は古代には東海道と東山(とうさん)道を結ぶ美濃路が通じ，16世紀末まで木曾・長良(ながら)・揖斐(いび)の三川が合流し，美濃と尾張(おわり)の国境で，軍事上の要衝地であったため，たびたび東西勢力がぶつかる戦場となった。1181年の源平争乱では源行家(ゆきいえ)軍と平重衡(しげひら)軍が対戦。1221年承久の乱では京方の軍が墨俣での防衛戦に敗退。戦国期，織田信長方の木下藤吉郎（豊臣秀吉）が墨俣に一夜城を築き，斎藤軍を撃退。小牧(こまき)・長久手(ながくて)の戦では，秀吉方の軍と徳川家康軍とが対峙した。
