Parthenope (English spelling)

...The city's population is 1,210,503 (1981), making it the third largest city after Rome and Milan, but together with the smaller cities on the Gulf of Naples it forms a huge metropolitan area with a population of 3 million.
[history]
In ancient times, the city was called Parthenope because the body of Parthenope, a Siren who threw herself into the sea, washed up and was the place where her tomb was built. The name Naples comes from the fact that the Greeks built a colony here and named it Neapolis (meaning "new city").
