A former town in Shuso District, northern Ehime Prefecture. The central settlement was planned and built by the Matsuyama Domain in the early Edo period as a distribution center for mountain village goods. In addition to producing high-quality rice, the town is also known for its thriving fruit cultivation, including mandarin oranges and persimmons, and greenhouse horticulture, including chrysanthemums and roses. In November 2004, it was incorporated into Toyo City, Komatsu Town in Shuso District, and Saijo City. 129.10 km2 . Population: 13,899 (2003).
