1866‐1927 Swedish mathematician. Born and died in Stockholm. Entered Uppsala University in 1886, where he obtained his doctorate, and studied under GMM Mittag-Leffler at Stockholm University, becoming professor of mechanics and mathematical physics in 1906. His greatest achievement is the integral equation he derived in 1900. This theorem states that when a continuous function K ( s , t ) called the kernel and a parameter λ value λ 0 are given, either there exists a unique continuous function solution φ( s ) for every continuous function f , or there are a finite number of nonzero continuous solutions φ( s ), and is also known as the Fredholm alternative.
