Swedish mathematician. Born and died in Stockholm. Entered Uppsala University in 1886, where he obtained his doctorate, and studied under GMM Mittag-Leffler at Stockholm University, becoming professor of mechanics and mathematical physics in 1906. His greatest achievement is the integral equation he derived in 1900. This theorem states that when a continuous function K ( s , t ) called the kernel and a parameter λ value λ ₀ are given, either there exists a unique continuous function solution φ( s ) for every continuous function f , or there are a finite number of nonzero continuous solutions φ( s ), and is also known as the Fredholm alternative.

スウェーデンの数学者。ストックホルムに生まれストックホルムに没する。1886年にウプサラ大学に入学，ここで学位をとり，ストックホルム大学でミッターク･レフラーG.M.Mittag‐Lefflerに師事し，1906年に力学と数理物理担当の教授となった。彼の最大の業績は1900年に得られた積分方程式，に関するものである。すなわち，核と呼ばれる連続関数K(s,t)とパラメーターλの値λ₀が与えられたときには，〈すべての連続関数fに対してただ一つの連続関数解φ(s)が存在するか，または，〉〈が0でない連続解φ(s)を有限個もつかのいずれかが成り立つ〉という定理であり，〈フレドホルムのオールタナティブ〉とも呼ばれる。
