Also known as gonadotropic hormone. Abbreviated as GTH. A hormone that regulates the development and activity of the gonads. In invertebrates, it is the juvenile hormone of insects and the neurosecretion secreted by the X organ of crustaceans. In vertebrates, it is the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) secreted from the anterior pituitary gland, and chorionic gonadotropin (CG) secreted from the placenta. Chemically, all are glycoproteins. Gonadotropins used as medicines are mainly isolated from urine of pregnant women, placental chorionic tissue, and pregnant mare serum, and are used to treat underdevelopment and abnormal conditions of male and female reproductive organs.

生殖腺刺激ホルモンとも。GTHと略記。生殖腺の発育・活動を調節するホルモン。無脊椎動物では，昆虫の幼若ホルモン，甲殻類のX器官が分泌する神経分秘物がこれに当たる。脊椎動物では，脳下垂体前葉から分泌される卵胞刺激ホルモン（FSH），黄体形成ホルモン（LH）と胎盤から分泌される絨毛(じゅうもう)性ゴナドトロピン（CG）がある。化学的にはいずれも糖タンパク質。医薬品として用いられるものは主として妊婦尿，胎盤絨毛組織，妊馬血清などから分離されたゴナドトロピンで，男女生殖器官の発育不全ならびに異常状態に適用される。
