This mosque is second in historical and religious importance to the Holy Mosque in Mecca. It was built by the Prophet Muhammad himself in 622, adjacent to his residence in Medina. Originally, it was just a simple prayer hall made of rubble, sun-dried bricks, and date palm leaves, but it was expanded and remodeled several times, and the mosque we see today was rebuilt in 1483 under the Mamluk sultan Qait Bey, and restored during the Ottoman Empire. It is an important mosque that served as a model for later mosques. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
