Philippe de Commynes (Commines)

Philippe de Commynes (Commines)

French chronicler and politician. Born into a Flemish townsman and aristocrat. At the age of 17, he served the Duke of Burgundy, but was captivated by King Louis XI of France, and in 1472, he left Charles le Temeraire (Charles the Brave) and joined the French court. He was on good terms with Louis XI and was highly valued by him. After Louis' death, he clashed with the regent Anne de Beaujeu (1461-1522) and was briefly imprisoned, but was summoned by Charles VIII in 1493 and played an active role as a diplomat. He served in the Italian Wars under Louis XII. His Memoirs , eight volumes (written between 1489 and 1498), record the achievements of Louis XI and Charles VIII (1464-1498), but the sections up to the sixth volume (published in 1524), which describe King Louis' political skills, are particularly outstanding, and he has been praised as "the first truly modern writer" (Sainte-Beuve).
