Kouyabouki - Kouyabouki

Japanese: コウヤボウキ - こうやぼうき
Kouyabouki - Kouyabouki

A deciduous shrub of the Asteraceae family (APG classification: Asteraceae). 0.5 to 1 meter tall. The stems are gray-brown, densely covered with fine short hairs, and well-branched. The leaves on the 1-year-old branches are ovate, alternate, and hairy, while the leaves on the 2-year-old branches are slender, and 3 to 4 leaves grow in clusters at the nodes. Flower heads bloom at the tips of the 1-year-old branches from September to October. The flowers are tubular and white, with five deeply lobed corollas and recurved lobes. The fruits are densely hairy and mature in October to November. They are widely distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, from the southern part of the Tohoku region westward. Another species similar to this species is the long-leaved Koyabouki (P. glabrescens Sch.Bip.). This species has hairless branches and leaves, slightly slender leaves, and flowers on the 2-year-old branches, so it is distinguished from Koyabouki. They are found in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Tsushima, and Chugoku, west of Miyagi Prefecture. Both species are used to make brooms from their branches, which are mainly used in sake brewing. The name comes from the fact that brooms are made from these branches in Mount Koya.
