San Sebastián (English spelling)

The capital of Guipúzcoa province in the Basque Country in northern Spain. Population 175,576 (1982). Close to the French border, it is famous as a summer resort. Until the Franco era, kings and heads of state stayed in their summer palaces (Royal Palace of Miramar and Palace of Ayeté), and the diplomatic corps moved there accordingly. Facing the mouth of the Urumea River and the Bay of Biscay, the shell-shaped bay is surrounded by Mount Igueldo on the left and Mount Urgull on the right, and features La Concha (Shell) Beach, Ondarreta Beach, and Santa Clara Island in the center of the bay, making it a popular place for swimming.

スペイン北部バスク地方，ギプスコア県の県都。人口17万5576(1982)。フランス国境に近く，避暑地として有名。フランコ時代まで国王や元首が夏の離宮(ミラマール王宮，アイェテ宮)に滞在し，外交団もこれに従って移転した。ウルメア河口，ビスケー湾に臨み，左はイゲルド山，右はウルグル山に囲まれた貝形の湾内には，ラ･コンチャ(貝)海岸，オンダレータ海岸，湾の中央にサンタ･クララ島があり，海水浴でにぎわう。
