Rosette Nebula

A beautiful emission nebula in the constellation Monoceros. It was named after its resemblance to a red rose. Only parts of the nebula, not the entire nebula, are named NGC2237, 2238, 2239, and 2246. Its apparent size is about 60 arcminutes, about twice the size of the full moon. It is about 4,600 light years away from Earth, and its actual size is about 100 light years. In the center of the rose, which corresponds to the center of the flower, you can see the stars of the young open cluster NGC2244. Ultraviolet rays from the high-temperature stars in this cluster ionize interstellar gas. It appears red because of the strong Hα (alpha) rays emitted by hydrogen atoms. It is thought that the cavity in the center was created by gas being blown away by the strong stellar wind from the high-temperature star.

いっかくじゅう座にある美しい発光星雲。赤いばらの花に似ていることからこの名前がついた。星雲全体ではなく、その一部に、NGC2237、2238、2239、2246の名前がついている。見かけの大きさは約60分角で、満月の2倍ほどある。地球からの距離は約4600光年で実際の大きさは約100光年である。ばらの花の花心にあたる中心部に若い散開星団NGC2244の星々が見える。この星団の高温度星からの紫外線が星間ガスを電離している。赤く見えるのは水素原子の出すHα(アルファ)線が強いからである。中心部の空洞は、高温度星からの強い星風でガスが吹き飛ばされたためと考えられる。
