In January 1883, Yoda Gakukai, Konakamura Kiyonori, Sekine Tadamasa, Kawabe Mitate, Okamoto Hankei and other scholars, theater connoisseurs, painters, and court nobility scholars gathered to form the "Kyukokai" (Kyoto Association), which sought to strongly promote lively history plays under the guidance of court nobility scholars.
