...The term "Katsureki" is said to have originated in October 1878, when Mokuami's work "Nicho Yumi Chigusa Shigefuji" was performed, Yoda Gakukai and others stated that "jidai-mono must be living history," and Kanagaki Robun commented in the Kanayomi Shimbun that it was "living history." In January 1883, Yoda Gakukai, Konakamura Kiyonori, Sekine Tadamasa, Kawabe Mitate, Okamoto Hankei and other scholars, theater connoisseurs, painters, and court nobility scholars gathered to form the "Kyukokai" (Kyoto Association), which sought to strongly promote lively history plays under the guidance of court nobility scholars. Despite the enthusiasm of Danjuro and others, the performances were poorly received by the general audience, criticized by newspapers, and gradually lost support from intellectuals, eventually coming to an end in the late 1880s. ...
