SE - Specialist

Japanese: SE - エス　イー

This refers to a job that involves designing and building systems. In Japan, the term is often used to refer to people involved in the development of corporate information systems. Although the term SE is used broadly, the work is diverse, ranging from accurately understanding customer requirements and designing hardware, building software and procuring hardware, to fixing bugs in completed systems. For this reason, SEs usually specialize in their work and become professionals who specialize in each field. Software programmers and SEs are fundamentally different people, but in recent years the boundaries between the two jobs have become blurred, and there are many cases of programmers moving into SE work.

システムの設計や構築に従事する職を指す。日本では、企業情報システムの開発に携わる者に対して使われることが多い。一口にSEといっても、顧客の要求を確実にくみとってハードウェアの設計を行ったり、ソフトウェアの構築とハードウェアの調達を行ったり、完成したシステムのバグを修正するなど、仕事の内容は多岐にわたる。そのため、SEは仕事を分化し、各分野に特化したプロフェッショナルとなることが通常である。ソフトウェアをプログラミングする「プログラマー」とSEは本来別物であるが、近年、両者の仕事の垣根があいまいになってきており、プログラマーからSEの仕事に進出するケースも多い。
