A city in northern Fukushima Prefecture. Established as a city in 1907. Prefectural capital. Occupies the Fukushima Basin and mountainous areas to the east and west. The central city is located near the confluence of the Abukuma River and the Sukawa River. It has been a castle town since the Middle Ages, and was ruled by the Itakura clan in the early modern period. It was also a post station on the Oshu Kaido road. The Tohoku Main Line, Tohoku Shinkansen, and Tohoku Expressway pass through the city, and the Ou Main Line (Yamagata Shinkansen) branches off from the city, as well as the Abukuma Express and Fukushima Transportation lines. As well as being a commercial and industrial city, it is also the political and cultural center of the prefecture, but Koriyama City has a more advantageous transportation location within the prefecture, and it has ceded the position of the economic center of the prefecture to Koriyama City. Food, glass fiber products, electrical equipment, precision equipment, and textile industries are thriving, and orchards of apples, pears, and peaches are spread out in the suburbs. There are many hot springs, such as Iizaka Onsen and Tsuchiyu, and Fukushima Racecourse and Fukushima University are located here. Mount Azuma and Mount Adatara belong to Bandai Asahi National Park. In July 2008, Iino Town, Date County, was incorporated. 福島県北部の市。1907年市制。県庁所在地。福島盆地と東西の山地を占める。中心市街は阿武隈川と須川の合流点付近にあり,中世からの城下町で,近世には板倉氏が支配,奥州街道の宿駅でもあった。東北本線,東北新幹線,東北自動車道が通じ,奥羽本線(山形新幹線)が分岐するほか阿武隈急行,福島交通の両線も通じる。商工業都市であるとともに,県の政治,文化の中心地でもあるが,県内では交通上の位置は郡山市の方が有利で,県経済の中心地は郡山市に譲っている。食料品・ガラス繊維製品・電気・精密機器・繊維工業が盛んで,近郊にはリンゴ,ナシ,モモなどの果樹園が広がる。飯坂温泉,土湯など温泉が多く,福島競馬場,福島大学がある。吾妻(あづま)山,安達太良(あだたら)山などは磐梯朝日国立公園に属する。2008年7月伊達郡飯野町を編入。東日本大震災で,市内において被害が発生。767.72km2。29万2590人(2010)。→福島藩 →関連項目福島[県]|福島大学 出典 株式会社平凡社百科事典マイペディアについて 情報 |
