…During the Edo period, a Dutch translation of Johnston's Illustrated Guide to Birds, Animals, Insects, and Fish (1660) was imported to Japan. Genjo Noro, a physician of the Tokugawa shogunate, was an interpreter for a Japanese translator, and asked about the contents of the book, and in 1741 (Kanpo 1) he produced a volume called the Dutch Comprehensive Guide to Birds, Animals, Insects, and Fish. Although Illustrated Guide to Birds, Animals, Insects, and Fish was not of much use to Japanese natural history, its illustrations were copied, and contributed to the development of Western-style painting. …
