Japanese: 柷 - シュク
Shuk
An ancient Chinese percussion instrument. It is a hollow square wooden box that is open from the top to the bottom, with a circular hole in the center of the top plate, through which a wooden stick is inserted and struck on the bottom and side plates to produce sound. It was used to signal the start of gagaku music.

中国古代の打楽器。上方が下方より開いた、中空の方形の木箱で、上板の中央部に円孔があり、そこに挿入した木の棒で底や側板を打って音を出す。雅楽の奏楽開始の合図に用いた。
