…He had a deep knowledge of languages, including French, Italian, and Latin, and was particularly influenced by Parnyi, Tasso, and Petrarch, and tried to introduce Italian elegance and melody into Russian poetry. Around 1810, he joined the Karamzin school and became a member of the Arzamas Society (1815-18), which aimed to create a new literary style in opposition to classicism and adherence to the archaic language. His translations of poems, From an Anthology of Greek Poetry (1817-18), had a great influence on Russian poets, including Pushkin. …
